Good health is largely dependent upon the body's natural ability to expel toxins. The major channels of elimination include lungs, skin, urinary tract and the colon; which is the most important. It is said that all disease begins in a poorly functioning bowel; and unfortunately constipation is suffered by many. Symptoms of stress in the colon include difficulty in passing stools which occurs when food moves too slowly in the large intestine, resulting in hard, dry stools. The major cause of constipation is insufficient fiber and fluids, which can cause bad breath, body odour, coated tongue, fatigue, gas and headaches.

When constipation occurs it is important to watch what foods are consumed. Increase whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Supplement the diet with additional Vitamin C as it promotes cleansing and healing. Other important nutrients that are essential to reverse constipation include Alfalfa, as it eliminates toxins and bad breath; B Complex aids digestion to properly break down fats, carbohydrates and protein; and Essential Fatty Acids encourage proper bowel movements.

Adequate bulk-forming agents should be consumed daily. Psyllium maintains healthy bowel functioning and can be taken in capsule form. Be sure to drink eight to ten glasses of water daily even you are not thirsty. Many people resort to using harsh laxatives when they are constipated. If necessary, a natural laxative such as senna may be used for a couple days and then should be followed up by a healthy dose of fiber every day. Physical activity is essential to promote movement of waste through the intestines. Even a short walk will do wonders for the body!

Constipation is a symptom that should be addressed right away. 70 million Americans suffer with bowel problems and of these, 100,000 lose their lives every year due to cancer in the colon. When fecal matter collects in the bowel it can produce autointoxication. This occurs when a hard lining of waste collects and diminishes the colon's ability to reabsorb water and nutrients, and instead reabsorbs fecal waste. As well, when the bowel is dirty it can harbor parasites and other harmful bacteria. So many people live with having a bowel movement every two to three days, when they should have regular elimination two to three times daily. When feces are retained in the body, it can also contribute towards heart disorders as serum cholesterol levels raise.

If you do not correct these symptoms, no one else will do it for you. Good health is a precious gift and we need to do all that we can to preserve it, because constipation is not something you need to suffer with day after day. Take control of your health and bring your colon up to speed!
