by Vincent Ziccarelli, MSc, Nutritionist Enriching Greens: The 1st Clinically Proven Greens Many studies have been done on the health effects of fresh fruit and vegetables. However, there have been few human studies on green plant food concentrates in relation to their health benefits. Many people use these products as a source of dietary antioxidants and for overall health support. Can the plant food concentrates in Enriching Greens improve antioxidant status in humans in the same way fresh fruit and vegetables can? That was the focus of recent research at the University of Alberta, on green food concentrates and their antioxidant and lipid lowering ( cholesterol balancing ) potentials. To conduct a clinical trial, I chose Natural Factors Enriching Greens, as I know they are produced under superior quality control and stringent testing standards. The control product had to be consistent, safe and of the highest quality. Enriching Greens met those requirements and was used in my research. What makes up a green super food?
Compared to other green supplements available, Enriching Greens contains one of the highest levels of actual green food ingredients per serving. It also contains antioxidant-rich botanicals, such as standardized extracts of ginseng, ginkgo biloba, milk thistle and grape seed. Since Enriching Greens contains many plant food ingredients known to be rich in antioxidant potential, I wanted to measure its total antioxidant capacity, compared to other popular green food supplements. In-vitro testing showed that Enriching Greens had the highest antioxidant capacity of any of its leading competitors. Nutrient analysis of Enriching Greens showed that it contains a substantial amount of antioxidant nutrients, reflecting of its high content of plant food concentrates. The levels of vitamins C and E provided in a 100g sample were 364mg and 141mg respectively. Beta Carotene content was 1500iu, comparable to a full serving of fresh spinach. The amounts of antioxidant trace elements zinc and copper were equivalent to the daily requirements for these two nutrients and Enriching Greens provides a significant amount of total dietary fiber and plant protein. Clinical trial also shows improved Cholesterol Balance
The activities of the potent antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase, and plasma concentrations of the antioxidant mineral zinc, were both found to be significantly increased through supplementation with Enriching Greens, compared to pre-supplemental levels. Lipid oxidation is a biomarker that measures the degree of free radical damage to lipids ( fats ) within the blood. Lipid oxidation is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and other disorders. In this study the plasma levels of lipid oxidation were reduced in the majority ( 75% ) of participants with Enriching Greens intake. Plasma levels of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol were significantly reduced, and the ratio of HDL/LDL increased. The higher the ratio of HDL/LDL and the lower the levels of plasma LDL and total cholesterol, the lower the risk for heart disease. After participants stopped supplementation, their levels of blood antioxidants and lipids returned to their baseline values, further supporting the association between Enriching Greens and beneficial modulation of blood antioxidants and lipids. This suggests supplementation with Enriching Greens may help reduce heart disease risk in addition to its other benefits. Click below to see these products in our catalogue:
