Description: An antioxidant carotenoid, derived primarily from tomatoes, protective against certain cancers and heart disease. Men who eat substantial quantities of tomatoes appear to have a lower incidence of prostate cancer.

Natural Factors Lycopene Capsule contains 10 mg of pure lycopene derived from selected ripe, organically grown tomatoes. The tomato oleoresin contains 6% lycopene in addition to other natural compounds found in the tomato, such as natural tocopherols. Men who eat tomatoes regularly reduce their risk of prostate cancer significantly. Four servings of tomatoes a week can lower risk by 20 percent: up to 10 servings per week lowers risk up to 45 percent.* Lycopene, the carotenoid that gives tomatoes and berries their red colour, is likely the protective factor. Lycopene quenches singlet oxygen (a highly aggressive and unstable oxygen molecule that does much damage as it steals electrons from other molecules) even more efficiently than beta-carotene and vitamin E. Lycopene has also been shown to diminish the effect of mutations caused by radiation exposure.* A recent study found men who ate lycopene-rich foods had a 50 percent lower risk of heart disease than men who didn't, according to Lenore Kohlmeier, Ph.D., a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
