Description: Vitamin B6 is most commonly available as pyridoxine hydrochloride. According to The Real Vitamin & Mineral Book by Lieberman and Bruning, the optimum daily allowance for Vitamin B6 is 25-300 mg for men and women. Additional supplementation with B6 has proved beneficial in cases of premenstral syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, prevention of one type of kidney stones and maintaining nervous system health. Vitamin B6 also strengthens the immune system.
Although Vitamin B6 is quite nontoxic, there have been isolated reports of nervous system disorders with very high doses (>500 mg per day). The sensory neuropathy produced by these high doses can be reversed when the dosage is discontinued. Vitamin B6 is contraindicated in those persons who take L-DOPA. Prolonged use of any single B vitamin can cause an imbalance, so a complete B-complex along with any single B vitamin is important.
Vitamin C serves as an antioxidant and preserves the stability of Vitamin B6. Vitamin C also enhances absorption of Vitamin B6. Calcium, magnesium, potassium and linoleic acid also improve the effectiveness of Vitamin B6.
High protein diets require increased amounts of Vitamin B6.
Many experts suggest that vitamins, especially water-soluble B vitamins, be taken with meals or up to one-half hour after a meal.
