Description: Vitamin B12 is the most complex of the vitamins as it contains a cobalt atom that is structurally similar to the position of iron in hemoglobin. It is the only naturally occurring organic compound that contains cobalt. Vitamin B12 aids folic acid in regulating the formation of red blood cells. Required for proper digestion and absorption of foods, it also vital for protein synthesis and the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. Vitamin B12 is also involved in myelin production and aids carotene absorption and conversion to Vitamin A. It helps to produce DNA and RNA and is necessary for people with pernicious anemia.

Vitamin B12 deficiency may be caused by malabsorption which is common to elderly and those with digestive problems. Alcohol, caffeine, exercise and pregnancy can also make persons deficient in Vitamin B12. Strict vegetarians require Vitamin B12 supplementation as this vitamin is found almost exclusively in animal tissues.

Anticoagulant drugs, potassium supplements, and anti-gout medications may block the absorption of Vitamin B12. It is most effective when taken with a B-complex vitamin, choline, folic acid, Vitamin C, potassium and iron.
