Description: You just misplaced your glasses, again. You were introduced to someone only yesterday and you can’t recall his name. It seems to be getting harder to concentrate these days. Sound familiar? The sobering truth is that as we age, we can lose over half of our ability to perform tasks related to memory, learning and concentration. This process in cognitive decline can already begin as we hit our forties.

If there was a magic bullet that could increase our ability to think more clearly, remember names and faces, maintain concentration, and keep our mental edge as we age, we’d surely all be taking it. However, burgeoning research into how the brain works also reveals that some nutrients may influence how well we think. Although not a magic bullet, Phosphatidylserine or PS is a nutrient that shows much promise in improving cognitive function in most people, but especially as we age.

PhosphatidylSerine (PS) is a nutrient building block for cell membranes. All cells use membranes to make and convert energy, and carry out life processes. As they age, healthy individuals can lose as much as half of their ability to perform everyday tasks related to memory and cognition.

PhosphatidylSerine is a nutrient found most concentrated in brain cells. Extensive clinical studies indicate that PS supplementation can help slow down the mental decline associated with aging.

Eleven double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trials, conducted with PS in the U.S. and Europe, indicate subjects were significantly improved on learning names, faces, recalling phone numbers, recalling misplaced objects, paragraph recall and ability to concentrate. Benefits persisted at least 4 weeks after PS was discontinued. For one feature, name-face recognition, PS ‘rolled back the clock’ by roughly 12 years, from an average ‘cognitive age’ of 64 to a cognitive age of 52.

In young healthy men subjected to exercise-induced stress, PS lowered stress-hormone production. EEG (electroencephalograph) studies indicated PS can globally enhance brain performance. Studies are also showing the excellent effects of PS on children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder.

Taken orally, PS is rapidly absorbed and readily crosses the blood-brain barrier to reach the brain. Doses of 100 - 300 mg of PS per day are recommended, preferably taken with meals. Taking less than 100 milligrams of PS may not achieve the desired results. PS has remarkably few side effects, although studies on pregnant women apparently are not available.
