Description:

Eat Your Greens

There are many greens products on the market. How can you decide on which one is best?

Dr. Mark Stengler, ND and Vince Ziccarelli, B.Sc. Nutrition co-authors of Drink Your Greens - Reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, fatigue, and more! recommend Natural Factors’ Enriching Green Factors.

Nutrients never work in isolation. They work as a team in the body’s biochemical processes. Each nutrient has its own important role. The great thing about super foods concentrates is that they use whole-food sources, providing a naturally occurring complex of substances that work best together.

  • Alfalfa: Termed the ‘great healer,’ it has been traditionally used to treat stomach ailments, digestive disturbances, and arthritis. It is an excellent source of chlorophyll, B vitamins, vitamins K and E, beta-carotene, amino acids, and plant enzymes. Its deep roots absorb minerals that other plants are unable to access, such as silicon, magnesium, potassium, iron, phosphorous, and other trace minerals.
  • Barley grass and wheat grass: Contains high amounts of chlorophyll, B vitamins, protein, minerals, flavonoids, and enzymes. They are richer in iron than spinach. Cereal grass juices are non-allergenic and tolerated by those allergic to gluten. Special note: A substance in barley grass resembles one of the body’s key antioxidant enzymes. This nutritional compound may protect against cell DNA damage.
  • Spirulina/blue-green algae ( cyanobacteria ): It is estimated to contain up to 71 percent complete protein - more than meat, fish or poultry. Its high protein content may help stabilize blood sugar levels. It is rich in carotenoids, vitamin B12 and other B vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phytochemicals and essential fats. It is a good source of gamma-linolenic acid, an essential fat needed for proper regulation of hormones and immunity. It is an excellent all-around food supplement. Studies have shown that sulfo-lipids extracted from blue-green algae protect human T-cells from infection with the AIDS virus. Special note: It is rich in chlorophyll and phycocyanin, powerful antioxidant phytochemicals.
  • Chlorella: This marine algae is high in protein, B vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, vitamin E and chlorophyll. Vegetarians use it as a source of protein and vitamin B12. Special note: Studies have demonstrated chlorella’s antitumor, antiviral, and interferon-stimulating activity.
  • Kelp: Brown algae provides a wealth of trace minerals, particularly iodine. It is rich in B vitamins, vitamins D, E, and K, and the minerals calcium and magnesium. Naturopathic physicians use kelp to detoxify the system and nourish the thyroid gland. Special note: Fucoidan (a polysaccharide found in kelp) demonstrates antitumor activities.
  • Lecithin: A natural food substance composed of phosphatidylcholine, glycerin, phosphorous, choline, phospholipids, inositol, ethanolamine, and serine. May benefit those with cardio-vascular disease, depression and gallstones. Also has antiviral properties and may improve memory. Used to treat atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Special note: Phosphatidylcholine significantly improved manic-depressive symptoms.
  • Phosphatidyl Inositol: It helps prevent fatty-liver formation. It acts as a pseudovitamin for the nervous system. It helps the body utilize important neurotransmitters. Special note: Scientific studies have illustrated that inositol helps relieve depression and panic disorder.
  • Carrot Juice: It is one of the best sources of carotenoids, particularly beta-carotene. Low plasma levels of beta-carotene have been associated with high rates of lung, stomach, and colon cancers. Beta-carotene has the highest provitamin A activity (i.e. it converts to vitamin A in the body as needed). It is also a powerful antioxidant. It helps the liver release stale bile and excess fats. High serum beta-carotene levels may protect against certain types of skin cancer. Beta-carotene helps prevent age-related macular degeneration.
  • Lycopene: This carotenoid possesses more powerful antioxidant capacities than beta-carotene and vitamin E. Studies have shown that it protects against prostate cancer.
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus: This probiotic improves overall health. It promotes intestinal health, helps treat vaginal yeast and urinary tract infections, replenishes antibiotic-depleted gut flora, and may reduce the risk of cancer. To nourish and sustain friendly bacteria, fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) are included in the Enriching Greens formula along with probiotics. Special note: Population studies have demonstrated that the consumption of cultured milk products ń which contain Lactobacillus acidophilus may protect against colon cancer.
  • Dandelion Root: Naturopathic physicians and herbalists use this as a liver tonic to stimulate bile flow, thus promoting health digestion and detoxification.
  • Mango: This nutrient-dense tropical fruit provides an abundance of plant enzymes. Contains high levels of beta-carotene, vitamins A, C, and B6, folic acid, pantothenic acid, magnesium, potassium, and trace amounts of other minerals. Has comparable nutritional value to carrots and spinach.
  • Siberian ginseng: This herbal adaptogen ( i.e. compound that promotes balance in various systems of the body ) helps the body adapt to both mental and physiological stress. It is reported to stimulate immunity, improve glucose tolerance, inhibit blood clotting, and possess antioxidant properties.
  • Soy products: Contains phytoestrogens ( such as isoflavone ), exert antioxidant activity, and help regulate hormone metabolism. They provide high levels of essential fatty acids. Vegetarians often use this high-quality protein source to enhance their protein intake. Special note: Many studies have demonstrated that populations who consume soy products regularly have lower rates of breast, prostate, and colon cancers.
  • Pineapple extract: This is an excellent source of the plant enzyme bromelain, which promotes protein digestion. It is a superb anti-inflammatory for muscle and joint pain.
  • Ginkgo biloba: This herb has been used in Chinese medicine for nearly 3,000 years. Ginkgo biloba contains critical phytochemicals such as bioflavonoids, flavoglycosides, proanthocyanidins, and ginkgolides. It helps in brain function, impotence, migraine, asthma, dopamine synthesis, vascular disease, and certain eye problems. Ginkgo exerts antioxidant activity and reduces the risk of dangerous blood clotting. Special note: Enhances oxygen flow to brain tissue in elderly individuals suffering from cerebral insufficiency. Significantly improves neurological responses of healthy subjects exposed to hypoxia (i.e. deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching bodily tissues). May benefit individuals with atherosclerosis, asthma and allergies.
  • Milk Thistle: Used as a tonic for the liver, silymarin, milk thistle’s key ingredient, helps prevent liver toxicity. Silymarin has powerful antioxidant properties. Special note: Milk thistle extracts protect against liver-induced toxicities in animals. Silymarin may also effectively treat hemolytic (red-blood-cell-destroying) anemia.
  • Grapeseed extract: Contains flavonoids known as proanthycyanidins, which are considered the most potent antioxidants. May reduce the risk of many chronic illnesses, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.
  • Phytosomes: A process whereby water-soluble herbs are combined with fat-soluble molecules to increase absorption and bioavailability. It also protects herbs from breaking down in the intestine before they can be absorbed.

Caution: If you are taking blood thinners such as coumadin, check with your physician before using greens products, since they contain large amounts of vitamin K.
