Description: WellBetX Extra Strength Omega-3 Factors + GLA has been specially designed to meet ideal essential fatty acid requirements for anyone with diabetes, metabolic syndrome and other blood sugar imbalances. The highest quality omega-3 fatty acid source of DHA and EPA is combined with highly concentrated gamma linolenic acid ( GLA ) from borage oil providing important nutritional insurance needed by everyone with any form of compromised glucose metabolism, especially diabetics.
How do omega-3 fatty acids help control blood sugar levels?
Omega-3 fatty acids are important in diabetes for several reasons. Since heart disease is the number one killer of people with diabetes, the importance of supplementation with pharmaceutical grade fish oils cannot be overstated. Just as in the general population, studies indicate that higher dietary levels of EPA and DHA are associated with a significantly reduced risk for cardiovascular death in patients with diabetes. Both DHA and GLA are often recommended to diabetics as both have been shown to improve and prevent diabetic neuropathy.
Dietary fat determines cell membrane composition and a lack of omega-3 fatty acids leads to reduced membrane fluidity, which in turn causes reduced insulin binding to receptors on cellular membranes and/or reduced insulin action.
Too much margarine, vegetable oil shortening and other foods containing trans fatty acids and partially hydrogenated oils appear to disrupt insulin action. One study estimated that substituting polyunsaturated vegetable oils for margarines containing hydrogenated vegetable oil would reduce the likelihood of developing Type 2 diabetes by a whopping 40%. Instead of these unhealthy fats, just substitute healthy, high quality omega-3 fatty acids.
How can GLA correct damage caused by sugar imbalances?
GLA has been shown to improve and prevent diabetic neuropathy. Diabetes is associated with a substantial disturbance in essential fatty acid metabolism. One of the key disturbances is the impairment in the process of converting linoleic acid to gamma linolenic acid ( GLA ). As a result, providing highly concentrated GLA derived from borage oil can bypass some of this disturbance.
In the Gamma-Linolenic Acid Multicenter Trail, 111 patients with mild diabetic neuropathy were given either GLA at a dose of 480 mg / day or a placebo for one year. Sixteen different parameters were assessed, including conduction velocities, hot and cold thresholds, sensation, tendon reflexes and muscle strength. After one year, all sixteen parameters improved.
Why is WellBetX Extra Strength Omega-3 Factors + GLA unique?
Pharmaceutical grade marine lipid concentrate.
Wild fish oil concentrate ( anchovy, sardine, and mackerel ). These fish are low on the food chain and therefore have few contaminants.
Molecularly distilled and ultra purified to remove any remaining contaminants.
Virtually free from lipid peroxides, heavy metals, environmental contaminants, and other harmful compounds. Highest standards in the industry.
Omega-3 Factors exceeds both Health Canada regulations and the stricter Council for Responsible Nutrition guidelines.
High potency EPA/DHA ( 400/200 EPA/DHA in each two capsules ), the correct 2:1 ratio of EPA/DHA for maximum effectiveness and the ratio used in most of the scientific studies that reported clinical benefits.
Ratio of omega-3 fatty acids to arachidonic acid >50:1.
Highly concentrated GLA derived from high quality borage oil.
Natural vitamin E used as a preservative.
Easy-to-swallow softgel capsule.
Each two capsules contain 1070 mg of fish oil concentrate provides:
640 mg of long chain omega-3 fatty acids including
400 mg of EPA ( Eicosapentaenoic Acid ) 200 mg of DHA ( Docosahexaenoic Acid ).
1000 mg of Borage Oil ( 20% GLA ) provides 200 mg of GLA ( Gamma Linoleic Acid ) omega-6 fatty acid.
SAFETY:
Children: Suitable at one half the adult dosage.
Pregnancy and Breast Feeding: High GLA supplementation during pregnancy and lactation has not been sufficiently evaluated, so is not recommended.
Diabetics: Elevations in blood sugar and cholesterol levels have occurred in some individuals taking fish oils, so blood sugar levels should be monitored closely when using oils.
Blood Thinners: May reduce platelet stickiness. Therefore those using anticoagulant drugs ( eg. warfarin, coumadin ) or platelet-inhibiting drugs ( eg. aspirin, ticlopidine/ticlid ) should monitor their blood regularly to reduce the risk of bleeding from excess thinning of the blood.
Other Considerations: Long-term users should also supplement with the fat-soluble antioxidant vitamin E when using any polyunsaturated fatty acids.
